How to Choose the Right Morgan Model for You

By George Lane of Richard Thorne Classic Cars (RTCC), Thames Valley Morgan Specialists

Few cars capture the spirit of traditional British motoring like a Morgan. Hand-crafted, timeless, and engaging to drive, these cars are as individual as their owners.

But with several models and engine variants to choose from — from the nimble 4/4 to the muscular Plus 8 — how do you decide which Morgan is right for you?

At RTCC, we’ve spent decades helping enthusiasts across the Uk and much further a-field to find their perfect model.

Here’s my guide to help you make the right choice.

1. The first question I always ask… How will you use Your Morgan?

Before picking a specific model, think about your driving style and purpose:

  • Weekend touring: A Plus 4, Roadster or Plus 8 offers long-legged cruising power and comfort.
  • City & short trips: The lighter 4/4 is agile, economical, and perfect for Sunday runs.
  • Track days or spirited drives: The Roadster or V8 Plus 8/Aero 8 deliver serious performance with traditional character.

2. Understanding the Main Models

Morgan 4/4 — Pure driving, peppy little engines, narrow wheels and affordable price.

World’s longest-running production sports car.

  • Lightweight and balanced
  • Ideal for first-time Morgan owners
  • Simple maintenance and running costs
Best for: Everyday usability, traditional driving feel, and value, great parts availability, earlier cars also provide simple DIY maintenance.

Morgan Plus 4 — The All-Rounder

More power and refinement than the 4/4, still light and tactile.

  • Great blend of classic charm and touring ability
  • Broad engine range over the years so loads to choose from accross different budgets.
Best for: Versatility and long-distance comfort without losing the Morgan essence, some great tuning packages and special editions available.

Morgan Roadster — The Performance Option

Traditional body with modern punch.

  • Strong acceleration and a great soundtrack
  • More power than a plus 4, wider wheels so great for people with a heavy left foot but also a great lazy GT if you want it to be.
Best for: Drivers wanting serious pace with the classic look

Morgan Plus 8 (Classic-Chassis) — The Muscle Icon

The world renowned V8 Morgan, famed for torque, noise and pace!

  • Classic steel-chassis feel with a burbling V8
  • Feels raw, alive and wonderfully analogue
Best for: Enthusiasts who want the most characterful classic driving experience, those addicted to the soundtrack of a car (I whole heartedly put myself into this category!)

Morgan Plus 8 (Aero-Chassis, 2010s) — Classic Looks, Modern Backbone

Revived Plus 8 on Morgan’s aluminium “Aero” platform. Often referred to as an Aero +8.

  • Noticeably stiffer chassis, more refined interiors and an overall more modern feel.
  • V8 grunt with improved long-distance comfort and stability
Best for: Buyers who love the traditional silhouette but want a more modern, GT-ready drive.
  • Serious power and serious noise, a real head turner of a car!

Morgan Aero 8 — The Modern GT

Aluminium chassis, flowing bodywork and a V8 for effortless pace.

  • More cabin space and road-trip comfort than traditional cars
  • Feels planted and composed at speed
Best for: Grand touring, cross-continent trips, and modern usability with Morgan soul.
  • Completely unique looks, there’s nothing else quite like it on the roads.

Morgan Plus Four / Plus Six (CX Platform)

New-generation bonded-aluminium chassis with turbo engines.

  • Modern refinement, everyday usability, safety and comfort
  • Manual and automatic options available.
Best for: Buyers prioritising reliability, refinement and daily friendly manners
  • The prices are starting to settle making these a real contender in the marketplace.
  • The turbo engine packs a serious punch!

3. Running Costs & Practicalities

  • Servicing: Morgans benefit from specialist care; our Classic Car Servicing keeps them in top form and the Morgan specialist stamp in the book helps preserve its resale value.
  • Parts: Many components are widely supported; and if they aren’t, then we have a little black book of specialist repairers we can use to restore or remanufacture parts.
  • Insurance & storage: Classic policies can be excellent value; ask us about storage and off-season prep. We highly recommend Howdens specialist vehicle insurance; they have put together some great packages for our customers over the years.
